Nissan Patrol Y62 — Performance Packages

The Y62 platform

The Y62 Patrol runs Nissan's VK56VD, a 5.6-litre quad-cam petrol V8 with direct injection and variable valve lift, driving through a seven-speed automatic. Factory-claimed output is 298kW and 560Nm. It's a capable engine and there's nothing wrong with the way Nissan built it, but there are two areas where the vehicle leaves performance behind as it comes from the showroom.

The first is the exhaust. The factory system uses a series of chambers, baffles and valves to control noise rather than conventional packing, which makes for a very quiet vehicle but a restrictive one. The engine has to work against that restriction every time you use it, and the effect is most obvious when the vehicle is loaded or towing.

The second is the calibration. Factory tunes are written to suit a wide range of markets, fuel qualities and driving conditions, so timing and fuelling are conservative and throttle mapping is deliberately soft. That's a sensible decision for a global product, but it isn't the best a Y62 can do in Australian conditions on Australian fuel.

GPC Stage 1 — Nissan Patrol Y62

Stage 1 addresses both areas together. The package includes:

✅ Manta stainless steel full exhaust system, engine-back, twin 2.5" mandrel-bent pipework into a single 3"
✅ Performance extractors in place of the cast factory manifolds
✅ High-flow catalytic converters
✅ K&N high-flow air filter insert
✅ Custom GPC tune, developed and validated on our in-house dyno

The extractors and full system replace the exhaust from the head back, so the restriction is removed at the source rather than partially worked around further downstream. The high-flow catalytic converters remain in place, which keeps the vehicle emissions-compliant and legal for road use. The K&N insert fits inside the factory airbox and reduces intake restriction while retaining the filtration and intake noise levels of the standard setup.

The tune is written specifically for the hardware fitted to your vehicle and validated on our dyno. We don't apply a generic file, because a calibration written around a standard exhaust won't make proper use of a system like this one.

How it drives

Throttle response improves noticeably from low speed, and the engine pulls more cleanly through the mid-range, which is the part of the rev range that matters most for towing and everyday driving. Transmission behaviour is more decisive, with less hunting between gears under load. The exhaust note is stronger without introducing drone at highway speeds.

The way you use the vehicle doesn't change. It still tows what it towed before, sits on the highway the same way, and drives normally in traffic.

Please note: The above figures shown are at the engine and are calculated by percentage increase over manufacturer quoted power. Every tune is individually tailored to the vehicle, therefore power & torque can vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on mileage, engine condition, wheel size etc. The above figures are to be treated as examples only.
