Nissan Patrol Y62 — Performance Packages

The Y62 platform

The Y62 Patrol runs Nissan's VK56VD, a 5.6-litre quad-cam petrol V8 with direct injection and variable valve lift, driving through a seven-speed automatic. Factory-claimed output is 298kW and 560Nm. It's a capable engine and there's nothing wrong with the way Nissan built it, but there are two areas where the vehicle leaves performance behind as it comes from the showroom.

The first is the exhaust. The factory system uses a series of chambers, baffles and valves to control noise rather than conventional packing, which makes for a very quiet vehicle but a restrictive one. The engine has to work against that restriction every time you use it, and the effect is most obvious when the vehicle is loaded or towing.

The second is the calibration. Factory tunes are written to suit a wide range of markets, fuel qualities and driving conditions, so timing and fuelling are conservative and throttle mapping is deliberately soft. That's a sensible decision for a global product, but it isn't the best a Y62 can do in Australian conditions on Australian fuel.

GPC Stage 2 — Nissan Patrol Y62

Stage 2 changes what the engine has to work with rather than how well it uses what it already has. The package includes:

✅ Harrop TVS2300 supercharger system, using the Eaton TVS2300 rotor pack
✅ Integrated water-to-air intercooler and front-mount intercooler radiator
✅ Front drive, front inlet design for a shorter, less restrictive intake path
✅ Retains all factory ancillaries, including air conditioning, power steering and the viscous fan
✅ Custom GPC tune, developed and validated on our in-house dyno

The TVS2300 is designed and built by Harrop in Preston, Victoria, specifically for the Y62. It's a positive displacement supercharger, which means boost is available from low rpm rather than building with engine speed. That matters more on a Patrol than it does on most vehicles, because the situations where you want the extra output — pulling a van away from a standstill, climbing a grade under load, overtaking on a single lane highway — are all low and mid rpm situations.

The intercooler core sits directly beneath the supercharger discharge port, fed by its own front-mount radiator and electric pump. Charge air temperature is the limiting factor on any supercharged engine, particularly one working hard in Australian summer conditions, and the intercooling system is the reason this kit tows properly rather than backing off after ten minutes on a hill.

An integrated bypass relieves boost under light load, so the supercharger isn't working when you're not asking anything of it. Around town and at a steady highway cruise the vehicle behaves as it always did.

Calibration

A supercharger kit is not a complete job on its own, and Harrop don't supply one as such. The ECU calibration is where the hardware either delivers what it's capable of or doesn't, and where the long-term health of the engine is either protected or gambled with.

We write the file on our dyno for the vehicle in front of us: fuelling, timing, boost management, torque modelling and transmission behaviour, all validated together and then confirmed on the road. Drive pulley sizing is chosen to suit how the vehicle is used and what you want out of it, not defaulted to the most aggressive option available.

We won't fit a supercharger to a Y62 that isn't mechanically ready for it. If we find something during the pre-fit inspection that needs attention first, we'll tell you before any parts are ordered.

How it drives

The difference is immediate and it's everywhere in the rev range, not just at the top. The vehicle no longer needs to be worked to make progress with weight behind it, and the transmission stops reaching for lower gears to find torque that's now available where you are.

Everything else about the vehicle stays as it was. It idles normally, it's quiet at a cruise, and it doesn't require any change in how you drive it. Factory ancillaries are retained, so nothing is compromised to make room for the kit.

Fuel and servicing

Stage 2 is calibrated for 98 RON and should be run on it. This isn't a preference, and a supercharged VK56VD shouldn't be run on lower octane fuel.

Servicing requirements change with Stage 2. The supercharger has its own oil, the intercooler circuit has its own coolant, and both need attention on schedule. We'll go through the intervals with you at handover.

Getting started

Stage 2 is a significant investment and it should be the right decision for how you actually use the vehicle. Call the team, tell us what the Patrol does and what you want from it, and we'll give you a straight answer on whether Stage 2 is the right step or whether Stage 1 will get you where you want to be.

NOTE: Series 3 - 5 vehicles add $450.00

Please note: The above figures shown are at the engine and are calculated by percentage increase over manufacturer quoted power. Every tune is individually tailored to the vehicle, therefore power & torque can vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on mileage, engine condition, wheel size etc. The above figures are to be treated as examples only.
